Image uploading tutorial

We want your image to look as good as possible on the site, so here are some helpful tips on how to upload your images. If you don't already have an image editing programme, there are loads of free programs available, such as the excellent IrfanView or GIMP.

1. Crop your image
You've just taken the funniest photo in the world, but your camera doesn't have a great zoom so the subject only takes up the very centre of the picture. If you upload the whole frame then when it's been resized to fit on the web page no-one will be able to see it! The crop function allows you to cut the picture down to just the funny bit.

To do this use the select tool to make a selection of the area that you want to keep, then select the crop function - usually located on the Image or Edit menus.

2. Resize your image to 620 pixels
If your image is larger than 1Mb the site will reject it - this is to stop the server falling over every time someone tries to upload a 10Mb file (it happens!). Whatever size your image when you upload it, it will be resized to a maximum of 620 x 620 pixels, so you can save the site even more work by resizing your image that that size before your upload it.

The resize function can usually be found on the Image menu. If it's a landscape picture (wider than it is high) then set the width to 620 pixels, or if it's portrait (higher than it is wide) then set the height to 620 pixels - the program should automatically set the other dimension for you.

3. Save as a JPG at the best possible quality
After you've cropped and resized your image and are saving it, the programme will let you save the image at varying quality levels. The format we use for images, JPG, uses variable compression which means that you can get very small files sizes, but the quality is rubbish. Your funny picture isn't going to be half as funny if no-one can see it!

To save it, choose Save As or Save For Web from the File menu. Select the type as JPG and set the quality to the highest setting - usually 100.

4. Upload it
Now you're ready to add your photos!
